designed for the treatment of malnutrition. They are made from varying combinations of grains,
pulses and seeds, milk powder, sugar, oil, vitamins and minerals. They are precooked and

• The alleviation of starvation and poverty requires sustainable and self-sufficient enterprise that harnesses the expertise, skills and knowledge of local communities to help them to help themselves. The local production of ready-to-use food (RUF) represents a unique opportunity to develop local food manufacturing industries and foster viable markets for a range of locally grown
crops. Manufacturing RUF from appropriate locally grown crops effectively harnesses market mechanisms and promotes agricultural diversity.

• In Malawi chickpea and sesame have been identified as appropriate crops to increase resistance to drought; Valid Nutrition's (VN) development and sales of an RUF made out of these crops has encouraged several hundred farmers to diversify their agricultural production. The employment of production and office staff, the purchase of packaging supplies and ingredients, the engagement of analysis and transport services and the purchase of capital equipment, all combine to stimulate the local economy. In addition, high quality, affordable RUFs are readily accessible for those who need them.
